The Grand 2014
This past week my now fiance Taylor and I traveled to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming for a bid at the Grand’s Summit. And… if that worked out I would propose to Taylor.
For this adventure I enlisted the help of a friend and guide Gary Falk of Exum Mountain Guides. The week started with a day of learning commands and techniques to be used on the ascent. The second day found us climbing the Snaz 5.10 which consisted of several pitches of off-widths and several roofs. After 650’ I threw in the towel and that left Taylor and Gary to finish the last several pitches putting them at app. 1000’. -Truly a brutal climb and utterly awesome!
We spent our evenings at the American Alpine Club Climbers Camp in the park and met some truly amazing folks. Anyone thinking of climbing in the Tetons should think of staying at the ranch which has hot showers and real bathrooms, all of which make a climbing trip that much easier.
We began our hike to the lower saddle on Friday morning; making our way from Lupine meadows through snow and glacier fields up to the camp at the base of the Grand Summit. Saturday morning we began our Summit bid at 0330 and found ourselves climbing through a cloud at 12,000 ft.
At about 0730 we found ourselves literally in a cloud on the summit of The Grand and Taylor found herself starring at a ring! Literally after she said yes the clouds parted and we found ourselves with a magnificent 360 Degree view.
All said, this turned out to be the best vacation ever! -I mean its not an adventure until you are sore, tired, and engaged, right?
